The Grid, Karachi’s Artist Hub

The Grid Club is a newly opened community center which opened its doors for artists, musicians, writers, thinkers and enthusiasts in July. It’s a great platform for artists to grow and showcase their talent. It’s a place to relax, play, unwind, talk, create, exchange ideas and perform. It’s a place where you can be yourself.

There’s a lot happening on the walls such as random thoughts scribbled and patterns drawn on the club’s freedom walls. The best part is that the visitors can use the walls as a creative outlet. They can write and draw on it with colored markers.

The Grid offers games, a library, an art gallery, a performing stage as well as a café. The ambiance and the interior make the place all the more unique.

Performance Stage

The stage is open to people. They can sing, do improvisational comedy, hold small discussions, play guitar etc. It’s basically an ideal platform to express oneself.

Café

The café offers chai and various other snacks you can munch on while you are at the club. The kitchen doesn’t have a door so you can even cook your favorite meal yourself. Obviously, you will have to pay for the items used.

Art Gallery

One wall is dedicated to enthusiasts who can put up artworks and their creations on the walls which can be sold as well. Members can have exclusive art lockers at the venue.

Library

The library is a really cool and colorful space separated by a glass wall from the café. Yellow-green stained glass window and a tree adorned with fairy lights adds to the overall vivid feel of the library. Books on the library’s shelves are donated by people so you will find different genres to read.

It is founded by two childhood friends Syed Aftab Shah and Abid Baloch, who are in their late 20s. Its located at Bukhari Commercial in Phase VI, DHA and remains open seven days a week from 12pm till midnight.

The Grid club has successfully brought the community together in spectacular ways. Age, gender, social class and physical/mental shortcomings are left behind each time one enters the Grid. The sense of acceptance and owning the place for people is a source of sheer joy. The essence of the club is to provide a safe place for artists to express themselves. All we have got to say is, let’s get on the grid.
