Zulfi Bukhari, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Overseas, has sent a Rs 1 billion defamation notice to PML-N leader Khawaja Asif.

What did Khawaja Asif do to defame Zulfi Bukhari?

On March 17, Khawaja Asif and his fellow PML-N leaders had a media conference outside of the Supreme Court. The former Minister of Defence had alleged that Zulfi Bukhari had used his influence as PM’s aide to bring in “floods of Zaireen from Iran without any quarantine or isolation as required by law and social responsibility norms.”

Khawaja Asif later on tweeted against Zulfi Bukhari, PM Imran Khan and the CM Punjab Usman Buzdar, saying, “their hands are soaked in blood.”

What does Zulfi Bukhari have to say?

In his notice to the PML-N leader, the PM’s Aide on Overseas stated, “You have essentially blamed me for the spread of the coronavirus.”

“By making and disseminating these defamatory statements […] you have inevitably injured my standing both at home and abroad. [The allegations] are likely to cause me financial loss, but also risk me being stigmatised and shunned in social circles.”

Bukhari further asked Asif to “withdraw, recall and retract the defamatory imputations”, as well as make public apology “to be broadcast and disseminated prominently” and “post the same on all online platforms and websites on which the [allegations] were posted.”

Zulfi Bukhari’s demands under this Legal Notice

A failure to comply with these demands under 14 days will lead to Zulfi Bukhari filing for defamation suits worth Rs 1 billion against Khawaja Asif and others.
