The Indian child rights body wants Netflix to ban the streaming of Bombay Begums after receiving complaints of scenes showing children consuming drugs.
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) sent a letter to the streaming service, Netflix on Wednesday, March 11 asking the streaming giant to investigate the show Bombay Begums and submit a report within 24 hours to avoid facing further action.
“The series with this type of content will not only pollute the young minds of children, and may also result in abuse and exploitation of children,” the NCPCR notice said.
Netflix has not yet responded to requests for a comment on the matter.
The Bombay Begums scandal is the latest to hit video streaming platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video in India. They have also faced complaints around promoting obscenity or hurting religious sentiments.
To this, industry executives have said that such complaints go against freedom of speech and expression in the country.
Bombay Begums has been released this week on Netflix. It is a series about five women from different parts of society trying to get ahead in modern Mumbai, formerly called Bombay.
In light of the complaints, several users on Friday tweeted their objections to the ban and showed support for the new Netflix show, making the hashtag ‘Bombay Begums’ a top trend on Twitter.
“If your child is influenced to do drugs by scenes in which a young girl does cocaine … You need to talk to your child, not the show,” a Twitter user said.
